Rough Luxe Hotel - Vorstadt 14 Switzerland

Claire Sullivan - Tuesday, October 20, 2009

First launched in London in 2008, the Rough Luxe Hotel experience is one of stripped walls, partially sanded surfaces and bare floorboards. Celebrated for its appropriateness during the economic climate the new style of luxury hotel has gone on to garner traction all over the globe. The newly opened Vorstadt 14 Hotel in Zug, Switzerland adopts such a mantra in its gently renovated 15th century building offering a combination of down to earth history and avant-garde modern design.

White Plastic Chairs by Tina Roeder

Claire Sullivan - Tuesday, October 20, 2009

Designer Tina Roeder has revived one of the most sold, and arguably one of the ugliest chairs in the world. She sands back the surface of old used chairs that she finds and then takes to each one with a drill, adding up to 10,000 individual perforations in each chair. She manages to turn a mass produced product into a limited edition unique piece.

Dyson Bladeless Fan

Claire Sullivan - Monday, October 19, 2009

Billionare designer James Dyson is at it again with the recent release of the Dyson Airblade. Somewhat of a pioneer in the airflow game, Dyson's previous projects include the Bagless Vacum Cleaner and the bathroom Hand Dryer. The new Dyson Airflow creates a constant flow of air without the usual buffeting that you would get from your traditional fan with blades. Dyson's theory is that we should all use less airconditioning for both health and environmental reasons and should instead rely upon gentle forms of natural airflow to keep our cool during the warmer months.

Terzani Atlantis Chandelier

Claire Sullivan - Monday, October 19, 2009

Proving that you can never get too much of a great thing, here again we write about the years most outstanding lighting design - the Atlantis by Terzani. We are obsessed with this masterpiece (as you may have noticed on our latest magazine cover), and therefore thought it might be worth showing you the equally as impressive longer version above - perfect over a long dining table.

The Atlantis light is available locally here.

Nav Boat by Charles Kalpakian

Claire Sullivan - Monday, October 19, 2009

Destined to feature in the next James Bond movie, the Nav speedboat by designer Charles Kalpakian takes style references from the classic teak Crest Craft's featured in old Bond films. It's modern moulded teak decking and sharply angled bow give it the sort of stylish agression that Bond boats are renown for.

Lazy Outdoor Chair by Patricia Urquiola for B&B

Claire Sullivan - Saturday, October 17, 2009

Newly released at the recent Maison et Objet fair in Paris, the Lazy Chair by the ubiquitous Patricia Urquiola has been given new life outdoors. The style has been a huge success since it's initial launch as an indoor version six years ago, and is now available in a durable three-dimensional white or black polyester fabric.

B&B Italia is available locally here.

Lucrezia Sofa by Baxter

Claire Sullivan - Friday, October 16, 2009

The Lucrezia Sofa by Italian furniture manufacturers Baxter screams elegance and sophistication at it's very best. My current interior obsession is a healthy mix of modern and classical. There is nothing more impressive than the backdrop of modern clean architecture juxtaposed by the ornate detailing of one or two key classical pieces of furniture to add an element of history to a new project.

Baxter is available locally here.

Villa Drusch by Claude Parent

Claire Sullivan - Friday, October 16, 2009

French architect Claude Parent, whose work lies equally in written theory and physical structures, designed Villa Drusch, a home which embodies his “theory of oblique architecture.” Built in Versailles in 1963, the home is a literal embodiment of his theory. Constructed primarily of concrete, Villa Drusch appears to be a home turned on its side, a bold architectural move which still evokes interest today. Living spaces are encased in aluminum-framed glass, which naturally lights the open interior. A staircase inside follows the slope of the exterior structure, leading to a second level where the ceiling, contrary to the rectilinear exterior, curves dramatically inward. Most surfaces inside are also cast from concrete.

Melting Ice Sculptures

Claire Sullivan - Friday, October 16, 2009

As the saying goes - every dog has it's day, so too does every ice sculpture. This ice sculpture installation is simply beautiful, albeit a little gloomy.

Alexander McQueen Accessories Spring 2010

Claire Sullivan - Thursday, October 15, 2009

Fashion designer Alexander McQueen is a creative genius. While the rest of the fashion world is experimenting with sky high eye catching heels, McQueen takes the concept of the "it" shoe one step further towards the outrageous with his recent collection for Spring 2010. Referencing a vast array of reptiles from both land and sea with the shoes colours and patterns, McQueen seems to reference two toed livestock with the shoes actual shapes. Love them or hate them, there is no denying the designers ability to create something visually amazing.
