Earth House -1968

Claire Sullivan - Tuesday, October 13, 2009

Designed in 1968 by architect Jim Olsen, this house represents the primal connection between man and nature, allowing its occupants to be inside and outside at the same time. The owner, former Ambassador to Iceland, desired a house that recalled the sod-roof houses around Reykjavik. The pool and house are on axis with Mount Rainier, paying homage to a treasured natural monument. The building is cut into the hillside so that the planted roof plane seamlessly joins the building to the surrounding landscape, making the entire dwelling seem like an excavated sanctuary in the natural environment.

Leggy Chair by Tesler Design

Claire Sullivan - Monday, October 12, 2009

We love this quirky chair by Russian designer Vladimir Tsesler. It's not particularly functional as a comfortable dining chair but its artistic value makes it worthy.

r5.5 by Jasper Morrison for Rado

Claire Sullivan - Saturday, October 10, 2009

British Designer Jasper Morrison has launched his long awaited watch collection for Rado. The two have been collaborating for some time now, with Morrison originally creating the packaging for the brand. His foray into watches is typical of both Rado's and the designers minimalist aesthetic. The chronograph design is reduced to essential elements, limited to three hands, two counters, and a date at 3 o'clock. Activation of the chronograph is through gently curved rectangular ceramic pushers.
