Claire Sullivan - Tuesday, November 03, 2009

The Sony Walkman digital music player has recently outsold it's hot rival contender the Apple iPod in the highly influential Japanese market for the first time in more than four years according to this recent article. Sony, whose Walkman cassette players pioneered the portable-music industry in the late 1970s and changed all of our lives for ever, have gained new traction by adding all manor of next generation technology including touch screens and wifi. All of a sudden I have a nostalgic hankering for rollerskates and Walkman moments from my youth.

You can buy the new Sony Walkman here.

Mercedes Benz Look Back to the Future

Claire Sullivan - Tuesday, November 03, 2009

The latest car from Merecedes Benz is part sustainable car part homage to the first gasoline powered automobile. The F-Cell Roadster is based on the 1886 Benz Patent Motor Car, designed by Karl Benz, with three large spoked wheels and an open carriage style body. The F-Cell has an emission free fuel system, electronic control systems and a joystick that takes place of the conventional steering wheel. While it's large spoked wheels and structure take influence from the 1886 design, the front bonnet is inspired by the nose of Formula 1 cars. It;s arm-like doors open upwards - reminiscent of the classic Mercedes Gullwing. Though the F-Cell may never make it into production it is encouraging to see that early automotive history can still be influential over design.

David DiMichele's Pseudo Documentation

Claire Sullivan - Tuesday, November 03, 2009

Photographer David DiMichele's latest series Pseudo Documentation depicts imaginary art installations that playfully examine scale and perception, blur the lines between truth and fiction and question the act of looking at art. The LA based photographer situates his subjects in dramatic surroundings - encircled by towers of melting ice, daunting slashes of bark and shards of glass. What is visually surprising is that the locations are not cavernous warehouses or grand halls but infact detailed dioramas that DiMichele constructs.
