1970 Designed Porsche Tapiro

Claire Sullivan - Saturday, August 22, 2009

Another sweet ride from the archives. The Porsche Tapiro was designed in 1970 by Giorgetto Giugiaro and was launched at the Turin Car show that same year. Giugiaro used a newly developed "folded paper" design technique, which he invented to create the car's straight lines and sharp edges.  Giugiaro went on to use his signature technique in developing other iconic cars of the time: the De Lorean (as seen in Back to the Future), The Maserati and the BMW M1. Giugiaro's style unquestionably also influenced other designs too, such as the Lamborghini, Ferrari, Audi and Bugatti. All of this influence from the Porsche Tapiro, which funnily enough never actually made it into production!

Gaudi Stool by Bram Geenen

Claire Sullivan - Friday, August 21, 2009

Bram Geenen created the Gaudi Stool in the same way that Antoní Gaudi designed the structure of his churches, by making a model of hanging chains,  letting gravity determine the strongest and most logical shape for withstanding forces. The stools shell is made of carbon fibre with a beam-grid substructure that provides reinforcing.

London based Platform 5 Architects have re-interpreted the old-school bay window idea. Their modern Oriel window was developed as part of a renovation of a run down house in Hockey. The modern steel joinery makes an excellent edition to the overall design concept.
