When weathly German businessman Christain Boros bought this old 1942 air raid bunker in Berlin, he knew it would be the perfect place to house both his expansive collection of contemporary and his family. He commissioned architects Realarchitektur to transform the space that consisted of strict symmetry and uniformity in all the spaces with created a general feeling of disorientation, and to turn them into space suitable for both living and displaying art.

The incredible space is open to the public by appointment, where you can view the collectors amazing works of art from the likes of  Damien Hirst and Tracey Emin.

Marble Bathroomware

Claire Sullivan - Tuesday, September 01, 2009

Without a doubt one of my favourite materials is marble.  It always reminds me of Mies van de Rohe's Barcelona Pavilion, where gigantic sheets of bookmark marble line the interior walls, giving an air of modernist sophistication. To add a little modernist drama to your own home check out Spazio Casa's range of marble and stone basins and baths. Available in a wide range of coloured stones and marble, they can be custom made to suit any size requirements.

The Tournament by Jaime Hayon

Claire Sullivan - Tuesday, September 01, 2009

With the London Design Festival soon to kick off, we've just got word of  The Tournament by Jaime Hayon in Trafalgar Square. The Spanish designer will create a gigantic chess set installation with 2m high ceramic chess pieces on a specially created mosaic glass chess board. The installation will be set between the two fountains in Trafalgar Square.

Each of the 32 chess pieces will be handcrafted by Hayón, working with Bosa, the Italian ceramics experts in Veneto, Italy. Many of the chess pieces will reference specific iconic buildings in London and their domes, towers and spires. Elements of the city of London and its history will be encoded on the pieces using Hayón’s very personal style. Each chess piece will be unique and hand-painted by Hayón himself.

Molded Plywood Leg Splint by Charles and Ray Eames

Claire Sullivan - Tuesday, September 01, 2009

During World War II, the U.S. Navy called upon Charles and Ray Eames to create a lightweight, inexpensive leg splint.  A highly sculptural yet functional device that could be mass-produced and, being modular, conveniently and inexpensively transported. Access to military technology and manufacturing facilities allowed the designers to perfect their technique for molding plywood, which they had been working on for several years. The development of this technique gave rise to  the Eames' subsequent, highly influential plywood furniture designs such as the Eames Lounge Chair.
