Photographer Fred Lebain

Claire Sullivan - Friday, November 06, 2009

Photographer Fred Lebain visited New York last spring taking photographs of various locations around the city. Then he printed out some large detail shots of the locations and took them back to where they were taken to take new shots of the gigantic prints perfectly aligned in their location. The execution is fantastic.

Urs Fischer's Installations in the New Museum

Claire Sullivan - Thursday, November 05, 2009

For his first large-scale solo presentation in an American museum, Urs Fischer has taken over all three of the New Museum in New York's gallery floors to create a series of immersive installations and hallucinatory environments. Working in a range of mediums, it's his surrealist piano - which appears to be melting under an invisible force and deconstructed street lamp that catch our attention.

David DiMichele's Pseudo Documentation

Claire Sullivan - Tuesday, November 03, 2009

Photographer David DiMichele's latest series Pseudo Documentation depicts imaginary art installations that playfully examine scale and perception, blur the lines between truth and fiction and question the act of looking at art. The LA based photographer situates his subjects in dramatic surroundings - encircled by towers of melting ice, daunting slashes of bark and shards of glass. What is visually surprising is that the locations are not cavernous warehouses or grand halls but infact detailed dioramas that DiMichele constructs.

Marble Works by Fabio Viale

Claire Sullivan - Friday, October 30, 2009

These pieces by Italian sculptor Fabio Viale are incredible. Constructed entirely in 100% marble, despite the fact that they seem as though they are constructed from cheap polystyrene. They are beautiful.

Charles Clary's Paper Installations

Claire Sullivan - Friday, October 30, 2009

Reminiscent of something out of a petri dish, Charles Clary's paper installations use acrylic, graphite, hand cut paper and lots of patience to put together.

Melting Ice Sculptures

Claire Sullivan - Friday, October 16, 2009

As the saying goes - every dog has it's day, so too does every ice sculpture. This ice sculpture installation is simply beautiful, albeit a little gloomy.

Ceramic Sculptures by Merete Rasmussen

Claire Sullivan - Tuesday, September 29, 2009

Having grown up with parents who were potters, I have a huge respect for these pieces by Ceramic Sculptor Merete Rasmussen. Each piece is hand constructed in stoneware clay using a coiling technique. The fragile and complicated pieces she achieves form almost perfect concave and convex shapes, which would not be easy when working with wet and malleable clay .
