Animals by Jaime Hayon

Anna Kidman - Monday, December 05, 2011

Baccarat, renowned for their beautiful crystal creations, has collaborated with larger-than-life designer Jaime Hayon for their new Animal collection. No longer is 'collecting animals' just a childhood pursuit. Baccarat reinvents this art whilst giving each animal a function. Whether it be a glamorous box or a decorative object, we think this wildlife triptych are the perfect playful Christmas gift.

All by Maurizio Cattelan

Anna Kidman - Monday, December 05, 2011

A retrospective, large-scale installation that summarises Italian born artist Maurizio Cattelan's work to date is currently on display throughout the centre of the Guggenheim museum in New York. Entitled 'All' it covers many aspects of his early life in Padua including hardships he suffered as a child to his menial jobs as an adolescent. The installation's various elements cascade from the ceiling with a chilling undertone. The horse hangs limply, whilst the pope appears to be suffering under the weight of the world whilst looking skyward. An incredible surrealist summary of his work, that highlights the very core of his body of work - works marked with contradiction and occasional humour.

Veuve Clicquot Clicq’Up by Mathias Van de Walle

Anna Kidman - Thursday, December 01, 2011

A playful summer home for the iconic yellow-labeled bubbles. Belgian designer Mathias Van de Walle has partnered with champagne company Veuve Clicquot to create 'Clicq'Up', an origami-like ice bucket. Clicq’Up is the first foldable champagne bucket and is based on a concept of origami and combining 120 cardboard refined paper and cardboard facettes in a striking, star inspired execution. Marrying form and function to create a contemporary, reusable design object, this foldable design results in an ice bucket that is easily transported, set up, and stored. The limited edition package comes completed with a bottle of Veuve Clicquot Yellow Label, making the perfect accessory for our summer picnics this year.

The Ring Installation

Anna Kidman - Tuesday, November 29, 2011

Mirror mirror on the wall, who's the fairest of them all? It seems that the Ring installation by Arnaud Lapierre appeals to the Narcissus in all of us. Situated in the Place Vendôme in Paris, it plays with the concept of urban space through reflections, light and the interaction of passers-by. Created for the FIAC 2011 conference and sponsored by Audi, it is an aggregation of offset mirrored blocks stacked to form a cylinder. The surrounding buildings and urban scape are subsequently reflected in the mirrored surfaces, changing the perception of the immediate space for all those who interact with it.

Sculptures by Anish Kapoor

Anna Kidman - Monday, November 21, 2011

Anish Kapoor is one of the most influential sculptors of his generation. Born in Bombay, he has lived and worked in London since the early 70s. Kapoor sees his work as being engaged with deep-rooted metaphysical polarities; presence and absence, being and non-being, place and non-place and the solid and the intangible. Throughout Kapoor's sculptures his fascination with darkness and light is apparent; the translucent quality of the resin works, the absorbent nature of the pigment, the radiant glow of alabaster and the fluid reflections of stainless steel and water. Through this interplay between form and light, Kapoor aspires to evoke sublime experiences, which address primal physical and psychological states.

Hand Drawings by Peter Jellitsch

Anna Kidman - Sunday, November 20, 2011

Peter Jellitsch's hand drawings have the appearance of being computer generated. Uninterested in the 'real world', his interest lies in the virtual world - feeling both technical and organic at the same time. We think they're quite something.

Still lifes by Klara G

Anna Kidman - Wednesday, November 16, 2011

After three years in photography school, Klara G first tested her skills at the Royal Dramatic Theatre in Stockholm during the year of 2000 shooting portraits and taking photographs for posters. After that, in her time as a freelance photographer, she developed her distinctive style - blending an element of surrealism into static images. Now living in California, and producing work for numerous magazines and websites - we particularly like these images that conjure a sense of play with nostalgia.

Art in the Dark Tonight

Anna Kidman - Friday, November 11, 2011

Cancel your plans, the only place you need to be tonight and tomorrow evening, is Art in the Dark. After last year's successful launch, Art in the Dark is back for a second year bigger and better than ever.

A community event, held at Ponsonby's very own Western Park, sees the park transform into a community hub, lit by installations, short films and live performances. Challenging both local artists to create illuminating art works that are powered by clean, eco-friendly energy. Headed up by the vivacious Celia Harrison (whose passion for this event radiates), we've never seen Western Park so alive, as it was last year with Art in the Dark's various installations.

We can't wait to go.

Circle Drawing by Chan Hwee Chong

Anna Kidman - Friday, October 21, 2011

Chan Hwee Chong can do something rather remarkable. He can conceive a picture by drawing one continuous circle complete with different pressure points. Watch as he completes the work below.

Wire Sculptures by Gavin Worth

Anna Kidman - Friday, September 30, 2011

Gavin Worth's sculptures are quite remarkable. By bending black wire, he is able to create the sense of 3d line drawings, that are light enough, to move gently in the breeze. He explains his wire sculptures 'tell stories of simple human moments: a woman adjusting her hair, a face gazing from behind tightly wrapped arms, a mother cradling her baby...the honest, unguarded moments are the ones [he] finds to be most beautiful.'
