The Malva Lights by German design studio Ett la Benn are made from an unlikely material - dried out sponge cloths which are then pressed over moulds. Available in a selection of lights from pendants to floor lamps, these lights were showcased last week in the Zona Tortona area in Milan.

Everybody Is by Masterstudio Design

Claire Sullivan - Thursday, April 22, 2010

Who could have guessed that the inside of the human body could actually take on furniture-forms pleasing to the eye. The Masterstudio Design, as part of the Academy of Art and Design Basel has chosen the analogy behind the human body as a way to describe the Masterstudio itself. They explain: Although every organ is unique in its size, shape and function, the human body only works through their interaction. Therefore organs also work in an interdisciplinary matter - like the students coming from different design backgrounds in the Masterstudio Design. As you can see, stools in the the form of kidneys, a chair in the shape of a heart and many others form part of the exhibition titled: Everybody Is.

Downtown Shelving by Roderick Vos

Claire Sullivan - Thursday, April 22, 2010

Dutch designer Roderick Vos has presented a shelving unit which references Art Deco skyscrapers for Dutch firm Linteloo. Named Downtown he says that 'the object is [to create] an original and functional interpretation of ‘how to store’ in this new century... Downtown lightens up our space as a temple or tower to honor our memories, putting little statues, souvenirs and books.'

RR Chair by For Use/Numen

Claire Sullivan - Thursday, April 22, 2010

Design studio For Use/Numen presented a new variant of the seating unit Musikstuhl designed by Richard Riemerschmid in 1899. The RR chair, like all variants of the original design, featured a bold diagonal bar intersecting the seat of the chair.

Mozzarella Chair by Tatsuo Yamamoto and Jun Hashimoto

Claire Sullivan - Wednesday, April 21, 2010

By the designers that brought you the Net Chair (which we wrote about a few days ago) Tatsuo Yamamoto and Jun Hashimoto have also collaborated to create the Mozzarella chair which is presented this week in Milan. Made from stretchable fabric suspended over a stainless steel frame, it almost gives the impression that it's a hard surface rather than soft.

The Lighthouse Lamp by Ronan & Edwin Bouroullec

Claire Sullivan - Wednesday, April 21, 2010

Showcased at Le Pelota, we saw the Bouroullec brothers' new product, the Lighthouse Lamp for Established & Sons. This design is made in collaboration with venetian glass maker Venini and consists of a black stone base and a voluminous glass bubble. It draws its influence from the structure of traditional lighthouse lenses. You may also recall Ronan & Edwin Bouroullec have created such products like this that we wrote about last year.

Established & Sons is available locally from here.

William Sofa by Zanotta

Claire Sullivan - Monday, April 19, 2010

The newly released William Sofa for Zanotta ticks all the right boxes in our eternal search for a classic sofa with modern styling. The slimline profile of both the seat cushions and the armrests mean it won't take over the room - but it is still incredibly comfortable.

Zanotta is available locally here.

Quark Table by Emmanuel Babled

Claire Sullivan - Monday, April 19, 2010

Another beautiful piece from own of my favourite designers - Emmanuel Babled. The Quark table is a large low lying table that comes as a limited edition in plexiglass, carrera marble or black stone. Stunning.

Mugrosita by Liliana Ovalle

Claire Sullivan - Monday, April 19, 2010

Mexican designer Liliana Ovalle has created a series of sofas and chairs based on the improvised furniture of the homeless in Mexico City. "The Mugroso Series are based on a photographic research where I explored  the hectic historical centre of  Mexico City,  portraying scenarios of  improvisation and poverty  where people find the way of putting bits and rubbish together in order to compose functional everyday objects. The objects grow in what appears random and sometimes absurd compositions, following no planning or safety concerns. The results are beautiful collages of bright plastic colors and filthy bits of different materials, each one connected differently."
