Spanish House by Javier de Anton Freile

Anna Kidman - Monday, May 30, 2011

Madrid architect Javier de Anton Freile has designed this house in Zamora, Spain. With a very narrow footprint, the entire house is only one room wide, with floor to ceiling windows on either side that flood the entire interior with light. The focus of the outdoor area is around a concrete slab that leads to a large swimming pool. Large shutters can be used to completely close off the windows for further privacy by simply sliding them across. The concrete exterior and streamlined aesthetic of the house enable it to fit inoffensively in with its expansive landscape. A nice piece of refined architecture for low maintenance living.

Tribeca Loft by Fearon Hay Architects

Anna Kidman - Monday, May 16, 2011

Completed in 2009, the Tribeca Loft by Fearon Hay Architects located in Manhattan, New York is a 550 square metre loft conversion. Located in the historic Green Industrial Building in Tribeca, it offers a bespoke and innovative response to the challenges of residing in Manhattan. The existing 3.6 metre high space is defined by the exposed reinforced concrete frame and the large multi-paned windows offering panoramic views of the skyline on three sides.

Fearon Hay describe their design below:

The insertion of steel framed, glazed volumes with raised timber floors provides elevated sleeping platforms within the loft space. The glazed volumes are accompanied by blank, white, volumes containing bathing, service and scullery functions. These service components are arranged in a linear sequence in the centre of the space. Both of these insertions are carefully placed amongst the existing structural elements of columns, beams and corbels, freeing the structure and the perimeter of the loft from division. Further layering and configuration of the space is offered by layers of operable fabric screens and sliding panels. The various areas of the residence may be separated from one another or connected to each other as desired. Collaborating with artisans of both New Zealand and New York has enabled the creation of custom fittings such as blown glass pendant lights, treated steel and freestanding stone washbasins and bath, resulting in a highly crafted and bespoke construction.

Furnishings include Boffi tapware, Christian Liaigre rugs and floor lamps, Fearon Hay custom furniture and blown glass pendant lights (a collaboration between Fearon Hay and Katie Brown).

Christchurch Airport's Regional Terminal

Anna Kidman - Tuesday, May 03, 2011

We get the first look at Christchurch Airport's newly opened regional terminal for Air New Zealand. The building itself, designed by BVN Sydney (principle architect) in collaboration with Jasmax NZ embraces organic forms that are channeled right from the ceiling through to the furniture fittings. The lounge seating, a collaboration between James Grose and New Zealand designer Simon James were designed with different traveller configurations in mind - to suit solo, couple or group travellers. The booth style seating enables a sense of privacy when necessary, whilst also keeping with the overall sense of openness the interior design concept embraces. The project also includes the brand new Koru Express Lounge for Koru passengers that are looking for a convenient but luxurious service (you can see the Koru Express Lounge behind the carefully carved wooden dividers). Simon James' product in collaboration with James Grose can be seen across the interior from the booth seating to the bar stools and tables - it's an impressive fit out and one we're to keen to experience next time we're in Christchurch.

Simon James product is available locally from here.

San Antonio Loft by Poteet Architects

Anna Kidman - Sunday, May 01, 2011

Occupying the top two floors and roof of a 1920s factory in downtown San Antonio, this loft designed for an art collector by Poteet Architects, uses white as its predominant canvas as a backdrop for their various artworks and sculptures. The upper level of the loft includes a black box theatre for airing videos and a high stud gallery created by cutting away the existing concrete structure. The floors are glossy and made from luminous epoxy, whilst many of the surfaces are lacquered in keeping with the highly polished, minimalist interior. The lower level houses the various living spaces including porches in steel for outdoor living, and skylight shafts to maximise the sense of internal light. The interior also sports many pieces of classic furniture including the Egg chair by Arne Jacobsen, the Eames lounge chair & ottoman, the Arco lamp and Tulip chair among others.

Installation by Sopheap Pich

Anna Kidman - Saturday, April 30, 2011

Standing proudly at the Singapore Art Biennal, this incredible sculpture is by Cambodian artist Sopheap Pich. Employing materials such as bamboo, plywood, rattan and metal wire, he wanted the sculpture to represent the feeling of his home - Cambodia. Standing tall in the foyer of the National Museum of Singapore - it reminds us of delicately stacked birdcages.

Interior Designer Ryan Korban

Claire Sullivan - Monday, April 04, 2011

At the tender age of 25 Ryan Korban has become the go-to interior designer for New York's rising  fashion elite. Having recently completed the interior of Alexander Wang's new retail emporium in Soho (shown above), as a continuation of his earlier work on the designers studio (featured by us here ), Korban has rapidly risen amongst the ranks as one of NYC's favourites. And it's easy to see why, his downtown aesthetic merges seamlessly with the addition of opulent fur and leather finishes. With an undeniable eye for the old and the interesting he successfully incorporates these ideas into a modern aesthetic. The designer strives to create "old-world romance" in each of his projects. I for one am enamoured by his striking creations.

Belgium House by AABE Architects

Anna Kidman - Tuesday, March 22, 2011

This Belgium house designed by AABE Architects is limited to a single level appearing weightless on the water area that separates it from the entrance avenue. To the left, the entrance shows its gallery wall. If you descend one level, the construction frames the view over the hillside to the country. The profile of the site is brought together by stairs whilst the kitchen benefits from a lateral patio that makes the most of the morning sun. The entirety of this house has been arranged for the owners to feel good - all elements have been considered: a cinema room, exercise areas, an ecological living room that overlooks their collection of beautiful cards, complemented by an office that sits proudly on the mezzanine. On top of that, furniture from leading manufacturers can be seen scattered throughout the space like the Ball & Chain chair by B&B Italia.

Spacious Loft by M n M Interiors

Anna Kidman - Monday, March 21, 2011

An old printing plant in the centre of Barcelona was converted by M n M interiors into a spacious loft for its artistic owners. Following the brief to keep it industrial, many elements of the original interior were retained and recycled. The floors were polished, but left predominantly in their original state, whilst many of the printer's original furniture pieces were restored. Exposed brickwork throughout is a considered nod to the early American lofts the owners wanted to replicate. With classic pieces of furniture throughout and cavernous spaces, it's a well executed piece of interior design.

Juvet Landscape Hotel

Anna Kidman - Friday, March 18, 2011

Set amongst trees and nature, the Juvet landscape hotel located in Gudbrandsjuvet, Norway offers seven private bungalows for a tranquil retreat. Designed by Jensen & Skodvin Architects, the minimally designed interior lends to complete emphasis on the surroundings. Floor to ceiling windows and a timber exterior enable the bungalows to blend seamlessly into their environment for perfect mountain viewing.

Herzelia Pituah House by Pitsou Kedem Architects

Anna Kidman - Tuesday, March 15, 2011

This contemporary beach retreat by Pitsou Kedem architects makes the most of its tropical coastal environment. With the Mediterranean just a couple feet away from its deck, it's hard to find a more idyllic setting on this stretch of the Israeli coast. Floor to ceiling windows adjacent to the patio area enable the exterior and interior to seamlessly integrate. The home also has long stretches of interior space complemented with wooden accents including natural wooden blinds and a deck that surrounds the serene lap pool. A floating staircase combines the lower and upper levels, whilst modern furnishings keep the interior classic and timeless.
