Tron Chair by Dror Benshetrit

Anna Kidman - Tuesday, December 14, 2010

There's no better way to announce our winners of the Tron: Legacy competition we ran a couple weeks ago, than by celebrating this ultra sci-fi chair release by Cappellini and Walt Disney Signature named Tron. Inspired by the soon to be released Tron: Legacy film, designer Dror Benshetrit presented this chair during Design Miami 2010. With each chair uniquely hand finished, each resembles the digital landscape of the outlands terrain in the movie. The chair is comprised of intersecting layers and textures of digital rock and is constructed with composite materials including polyester resin - which Disney hopes will encourage each owner to sit 'off the grid'. And whilst it may not be the prettiest chair we've ever laid our eyes on, I'm sure for Tron enthusiasts, it's another highly valuable collectible worth investigating further.

The winners of our competition are:

Winnie Chou, Jeremy May, Rose Watkins, Ryland Wood and David Moreland.

Wonderland Candleholders by Artecnica

Anna Kidman - Monday, December 13, 2010

It's no surprise that American designer Stephen Johnson's recently released Wonderland candleholders for Artecnica remind us of Alice's journey down the rabbit hole. The new edition of this product was created to celebrate this year's Design Miami and can be purchased exclusively online through Gretel Home.

Lampe Gras designed by architect Bernard-Albin Gras

Anna Kidman - Friday, December 03, 2010

The Lampe Gras designed by architect Bernard-Albin Gras was initially designed as a series of lamps for use in office and industrial environments. It is the quintessential French architect lamp. Here at Design Folio, we like nothing better than design that remains classic and timeless in form - and with its simplistic aesthetic, it's no wonder it's gained a cult following worldwide.

The 205 La Gras Table Lamp is available locally from here.

Plantation Coat Stand by Derlot

Anna Kidman - Tuesday, November 30, 2010

We particularly like the Plantation coat stand made from marine-grade ply, part of Australian brand Derlot's overall Plantation collection. With a strong aesthetic that embraces clean lines, it would suit a variety of environments, and looks sturdy enough to carry even the lushest of coats.

The Plantation coat stand is available locally from here.

Opera Watch for $1.2 Million

Anna Kidman - Tuesday, November 30, 2010

If you have a cool $1.2 million in your back pocket and have an interest in timepieces, Manufacture Royale's Opera tourbillon watch could be for you. Comprised of 319 individual parts sporting sapphires, gold and a manually wound mechanism that creates a power reserve of 100 hours, it sings a musical chime to signal its minute repeater - the hours are sounded in the note A whilst the minutes in C sharp. With only 12 of these watches made worldwide, each will come presented in a veneered wooden box that resembles the Bastille Opera House in Paris.

Tron: Legacy Movie Competition

Anna Kidman - Tuesday, November 30, 2010

Tron Legacy, Disney's latest 3D digital feat to its original cult movie Tron, is released December 16th. The basic plot line is a father in search of his son, but interwoven throughout the graphics (and what is particularly of interest to us) is the design inspiration for the movie. Director Joseph Kisinki is an architect by day and was influenced by the work of architect Norman Foster for the movie. The interior set design drew influence from the Elle Decoration Suite by Jean Paul Gaultier. The director also cites Mies van der Rohe and Neil Denari as further architectural influences. It looks set to be a visual feast of designs.

We have five double pass prize packs to giveaway to Tron: Legacy consisting of a soundtrack and tickets.

Entries close December 13th 2010.

Hanger Racks by Nendo

Claire Sullivan - Monday, November 29, 2010

Anyone with an over flowing wardrobe will know just how difficult it is to find a hanger system that looks good and functions properly. These Hangers formed part of a recent exhibition held by Philips de Pury in the Saatchi Gallery in London, titled Thin Black Lines. The works are by one of our favourite Japanese design collectives - Nendo, and are solid steel works designed to visually reference traced or sketched lines made on a designers sketch pad. The designs successfully translate the forms from two to three dimensional shapes.

Animated Gifs by Richard Wilkinson

Anna Kidman - Thursday, November 25, 2010

Many computer Gifs don't present themselves seamlessly but Richard Wilkinson has managed to create some of the most beautiful examples of Gifs that we've seen. Watch as the birds appear to paint themselves in front of your eyes.

Design Folio Incubator Exhibition

Anna Kidman - Tuesday, November 23, 2010

Last Thursday evening saw the launch of the first Design Folio Incubator Exhibition in our new Notoriety Gallery. With a focus on the support and development of talented New Zealand designers we are nurturing the best original, innovative and authentic design being produced locally, and helping to realise the commercial potential of new ideas. For this, the first event in our new Notoriety Gallery we had the pleasure of working with Scrap Wall.  A purveyor of great design in his concept store - ONE, Scrap was the perfect person to select the best of local designs available, which he displayed with a selection of the latest lighting from ECC. With delicious libations provided by our friends at Man O' War and San Pellegrino, and a huge turnout of design passionate locals, it was a great night for design.
