simple inspiration - kimono

Claire Sullivan - Monday, March 30, 2009

If only all offices felt this peaceful. This seems like a space that no matter the owner -  it would always be clean, with a gentle breeze passing through. Japanese designer Nosigner found inspiration for his own office interior in Sendagi, Tokyo from a traditional hagoromo (feather robe) kimono.

The feather curtain covers a vast majority of the space, carefully hiding the shelving units whilst remaining beautiful to look at.  The interior is also furnished with Nosigner products including the Pokkari hanging light and Arborism table.

Stairway to heaven

This is simplistic beauty at its most impressive. Zurich based architectural practice EM2N have created a dramatic entrance to the Public Records Office in Liestal, Switzerland.

Pick your clothes up

Claire Sullivan - Sunday, March 29, 2009

A clothes rail that resembles a line of pearls...this may not be the most practical solution in the world (especially in a market that suggests we downsize our real estate) but it adds an interesting twist to the regular wardrobe scenario.

Infact, if you have the space for it (an entire room) you can have fun with varying heights and spaces.

Designer Hung-Ming Chen from Swedish design studio Hommin  explains that she wanted to do something different and flexible:

'It looks like a big necklace...it could be used to divide spaces such as in a shop. The design item is flexible and has other possibilities.'

I think she might have it sussed - but only if you don't mind pearls in large scale.

Oversized and fun

Claire Sullivan - Sunday, March 29, 2009

Knitting made a bit of a come-back recently but we have never seen it on such a grand scale. Dutch designer Bauke Knottnerus designed the 'phat knit' series in 2008. This is knitting you can sit on, lie on, lounge on, snuggle up on - in other words, it's a unique take on something that filled (some of our) childhood memories.

You would need mighty knitting needles to get this underway - and in this case, they did. The pieces are actually made by oversized needles that are used to produce a variety of objects from carpets to seats.

I wonder if the inspiration for this series came from the designer's own last name...

Bubbles

Claire Sullivan - Saturday, March 28, 2009

Dutch designer Richard Hutton is best known for his associations with Droog Design, as one of the founding members his designs have been prolific.
The new aluminium Cloud Chair will be launched at this year's Milan Furniture Fair by the Swiss company Ormand Contemporary Editions. This impressive chair reminds me more of dishwater bubbles than clouds.

A little bit noose

Claire Sullivan - Saturday, March 28, 2009

These lights are certainly not the friendliest looking lights I've ever seen, but they do make a statement. Designer Ana-Maria Pasesca Stewart, inspired by a hangman's noose, used thick ropes with power cables woven into the centre to create this effect. Each light can operate with an industrial pulley system allowing the owner to adjust the height. In my opinion, these are best suited to high-studded ceilings against a minimalist backdrop - we wouldn't want dinner guests to get the wrong idea now would we.

Mid Century Modern

Claire Sullivan - Monday, March 23, 2009

Five years of living in New York has left me with an insatiable passion for American mid century modern design. This Milan apartment featured in Elle Décor, and owned by Chicago based Interior Designer Nate Berkus, represents everything that I love about the mid century style. This place exudes class. Lucky for us local company Flaunt ID offer a fantastic selection of American and South American mid century pieces. In fact they recently had available a pair of fantastic Milo Baughman chairs, similar to the ones featured here.

Twisted Visions

Described on their website as warping wallpaper technology, this wallpaper conjures up references of way too bigger nights. German company Surrielien will custom warp your wallpaper around any wall-mounted objects, creating your own nod to Dali. Just go easy on the Absinthe afterwards.

SLS Hotel in Beverly Hills

Claire Sullivan - Thursday, March 19, 2009

I am a hotel snob. But to be fair, good luck working in this industry and being content with the plethora of everything polyester and pastel at the local Holiday Inn.

So when the ubiquitous Philippe Starck throws his design prowess into a new hotel, folks like me start checking their airpoints balance. The new SLS Hotel in Beverly Hills looks, to my highly critical eye, to tick all of the Design Hotel aficionado’s style boxes. Starck has ditched his previous obsession with all things white and clinical, in favour of a new eccentric style.  With exclusive custom designed Cassina furniture adorning the guest rooms, and a Moss design boutique in the foyer, this could definitely be my home away from home.
