Ribbon Chair for Artifort.

Pumpkin Chair for Ligne Roset.

Butterfly Chair for Artifort.

Flower Chair for Magis.

French designer Pierre Paulin, famed for his unusually shaped chairs and a favourite of French presidents, has died at the age of 81. His seats, shaped like mushrooms and tongues and decorated in an array of bright colours, won widespread acclaim and found their way into major museums across the world.

They now form part of collections in New York's Museum of Modern Art, The Museum of Decorative Arts in Paris, and London's Victoria and Albert Museum.

Born in Paris on July 9, 1927, Paulin was influenced early on by Japanese drawings and American designers Charles and Ray Eames. This led him to design his signature furniture which was simple, functional and hard-wearing.

English photographer Jake Walters creates real drama with these fashion shots. The fluidity in the background movement synchronizes beautifully with the actions made by the models.

Tree Hotel by Tham & Videgard Hansson

Claire Sullivan - Tuesday, June 16, 2009

Last week we wrote about boutique alpine accommodation. This week we've found something suited to those with a greener passion. The Hasad tree hotel is a lightweight aluminium structure designed to be hung high up around a tree trunk. The mirrored exterior reflects the surrounding forest and sky giving an almost camouflaged effect to the structure.

The plywood constructed interior provides living for two people, with a double bed, small kitchen, bathroom, living room and roof terrace and of course 360 degree views.

Chantemerle Collection by Zoffany

Claire Sullivan - Tuesday, June 16, 2009

A surprisingly contemporary collection of prints and wallpapers inspired by eighteenth century French fabrics. Elegantly re-working fine copperplate toiles, block printed indiennes and hand-painted silks that have been coloured in both historical and contemporary shades, printed on quality linens and wallpapers.

Zoffany is available locally here.

Venus Chair by Poliform

Claire Sullivan - Tuesday, June 16, 2009

Favoured for his often fantastical designs, Marcel Wander's Venus Chair launched by Poliform at this year's Milan Fair, again shows the decorative appeal of Wander's designs. The textured floral pattern on the chair's exterior is a typical example of the designer's keen passion for vintage ceiling plaster-work. The soft leather seat and swivel base make the overall design even more appealing.

Poliform is available locally here.
