My House opens in LA

Claire Sullivan - Thursday, July 16, 2009

Anyone familiar with the Los Angeles nightlife scene will be aware of their fondness for private parties held in exclusive Bel Air mansions. Over the past few years local bar owners have been taking note, by creating establishments named Villa and Home to try to attract the 'it' crowds that prefer to party in private environments. The newest addition to the Hollywood scene is the aptly named My House.

Designed by Dodd Mitchell, My House re interprets the classic house party environment on a very grand scale. Featuring a fully operational kitchen (as all good house parties seem to revolve around the kitchen) and bedroom suite amongst it's nooks and crannies. The interior style itself is reminiscent of 50's Hollywood too, with its velvet club chairs, dark wood veneers and deep shag pile carpets.

Copper Cabinet by Paul Kelley

Claire Sullivan - Wednesday, July 15, 2009

I first met UK based furniture designer Paul Kelley back in 2007. An interior designer friend and I visited his workshop in the industrial outskirts of London. We were both taken by the designer's incredible craftsmanship and attention to detail.

Kelley's cabinets, consols and desks are all crafted by hand using complimentary materials such as walnut, mahogany, acrylic and copper, and are all limited edition or one off pieces.

The above cabinet in copper plate is lined with vibrant red acrylic with  a hidden drawer made from solid walnut.

Aston Martin Cygnet.

Claire Sullivan - Tuesday, July 14, 2009

The newly released Aston Martin Cygnet will be the world's smallest super-luxury saloon and represents Aston's most radical departure in its 90 year history. The Cygnet will only be available to those who already own an Aston Martin, with the car specifically aimed at the one-third  of existing Aston owners who own a mini sized car, such as a Mini, the Cygnet will be suited to short haul  urban use. The philosophy is similar to that of luxury super yachts, most of which have accompanying smaller tenders designed for shorter trips.

Shitake Stools by Marcel Wanders for Moroso.

Claire Sullivan - Tuesday, July 14, 2009

Wanders’ Shitake stools feature an embossed lacy relief pattern inspired by the tale of Snow White: finding her in a death-like sleep, the elves mournfully sit on little stools covered in the lace which Snow White had embroidered and given to them for their 100th birthday. Because they grow on tree trunks, Shitake mushrooms are referred to, in the designer’s native Dutch, by a word that means “bench for elves”.

Moroso is available locally here.

Damien Hirst for Lance Armstrong

Claire Sullivan - Monday, July 13, 2009

Artist Damien Hirst has created a design that will appear on Lance Armstrong's bike as he heads into the final stretch of the Tour de France at the end of the month. Armstrong was "speechless" after seeing the design for the Trek Madone bicycle that Hirst, the Turner Prize-winning artist known for his displays of animals in formaldehyde, “put his touches on.” The artwork on the bike features Butterflies, one of Hirst's signature motifs.

The Three Little Pigs - Revised

Claire Sullivan - Monday, July 13, 2009

Have children and can't wait to introduce them to the wonderful world of architecture? New York based illustrator Steve Guarnaccia has retold the classic childhood fable, The Three Little Pigs, to include a cast of architecture greats. Frank Gehry, Le Corbusier and Frank Lloyd Wright all appear in pig-form (of course), set amongst the houses and objects created by these masters of 20th Century achitecture and design. But then one day the wolf pays a visit to them...
