Metamorphosis Chair by Ian Blasco

Claire Sullivan - Tuesday, September 22, 2009

What looks to be carved out of volcanic rock is actually a chair cut by hand from 16 layers of expanded polypropylene foam. Blasco’s design is inspired by the relationship between rectilinear manmade structures and natural forms - intentionally leaving ambiguity about which is emerging and which is being consumed.

Portable Photobooth

Claire Sullivan - Tuesday, September 22, 2009

Two commercial photographers from Melbourne have developed the worlds first fully portable, high resolution photobooth. What started as their own project, when they turned a tiny room into a digital photobooth for a studio launch party, turned into an architecturally designed part inflatable instant hit. The booth can be hired for events and the duo have set up a website to track all of the images that have been taken at various events.

Claire Sullivan - Monday, September 21, 2009

Another post inspired by our love of origami, except this time, it seems Polish designer Jakub Piotr Kalinowski is also riding the wave. Named .Ori and made from folded steel to resemble the delicacy of paper, this stool can also be stacked.

Merus Winery in Napa Valley, California

Claire Sullivan - Monday, September 21, 2009

Merus winery in Napa Valley, California is more than just your average cellar retail outlet. We love their choice of lights - the Allegro Pendant by Foscarini hangs centre-stage above the main table, whilst Tom Dixon's Beat Lights adorn the bar area. Exposed beams are the only reference to the past in this interior design strategy - it looks like the kind of place we could spend the afternoon.

Lights available locally from here and go here for Merus winery.

Derlot Designs Landing Soon

Claire Sullivan - Friday, September 18, 2009

Landing on New Zealand shores shortly are some of our favourite designs this season. Australian design company Derlot (headed up by Alexander Lotersztain) are quite clever in their approach. They offer a range of products spanning commercial and residential - and it's their ability across seating like Twig - a seat that resembles the letter 't', that enforces their ability to come up with unique ideas in an industry that can be cluttered - so often with the same.

It will be available locally from here.

Bestlite BL9 XL Pendant by Gubi

Claire Sullivan - Thursday, September 17, 2009

The design team at Danish furniture and lighting manufacturer Gubi have designed the Bestlight BL9XL pendant light based on the iconic forms of the original. Designer Robert Dudley Best made the first drawings of the light during his study stays as an industrial designer in Düsseldorf and Paris. Later, the Architects' Journal proclaimed that Best had designed the first Bauhaus manifestation in England.
