Faraway Collection by Zucchetti

Claire Sullivan - Wednesday, September 16, 2009

This dreamy bathroom collection is a far cry from the austere and minimalist settings we're so accustomed to these days. Aptly named 'Faraway', this collection by Italian firm Zucchetti marks the first achievement by Zucchetti and Kos as a group. They describe ''Faraway (as) the metaphor of a journey into real or virtual experiences: surpassing the ritual bathroom.''

As their most complex bathroom collection to date, with over 50 types of taps available - they still manage to pull of a touch of whimsical.

Paraty House by Marcio Kogan Architects

Claire Sullivan - Tuesday, September 15, 2009

Brazilian architect Marcio Kogan has developed a strong signature aesthetic that's typified in this newly completed beach house in Paraty, Brasil. Two reinforced concrete boxes sit stacked on top of each other, with an eight meter cantilever which gives the internal living spaces a feeling of being at one with the outdoors.

Catherine Martin's Rug Collection

Claire Sullivan - Tuesday, September 15, 2009

Two-time Academy Award winner and globally renowned costume designer Catherine Martin (who is perhaps best known for her work on the movie Moulin Rouge) has collaborated with Designer Rugs to produce a series of rugs. Celebrating flora, fauna, children's patterns and lace designs, she offers an interesting twist to Designer Rugs' collections. All rugs are hand-tufted in 100% New Zealand wool.

Available locally from here.

Re-Stitch, old denim - new beanbags

Claire Sullivan - Monday, September 14, 2009

We've fallen quite hard for Australian design firm Derlot. Not only do they have interesting products, they are also well-styled in a quirky manner. Take the Re-Stitch project for example - designer Alexander Lotersztain sourced old denim (the stuff that's typically thrown out) and put it to good use making these beanbags.

Available locally from here.

Typefaces by Vladimar Koncar

Claire Sullivan - Monday, September 14, 2009

This reminds me of writing words in shells on the beach (who sells sea shells on the sea shore?). Creative director and typographer Vladimir Koncar has created various typefaces from ordinary objects around the home - he also obviously has a clever sense of humour.

Charlie Davidson's Chair at 100% Design

Claire Sullivan - Saturday, September 12, 2009

Titled ''is this the coolest chair ever made?'' designer Charlie Davidson is asking for one answer: no. However, all the same, this chair constructed with steel is interesting and it will be showcased at this year's 100% design.

Portugal House by Arquitectos

Claire Sullivan - Saturday, September 12, 2009

This house in Vila Nova Gaia, Portugal designed by architecture firm Arquitectos Anonimos and Paulo Teodosio was made on a site area of 320 square metres. At a mere 90 square metres, the brief included manipulating the interior space and terrace so that it allowed for a view of the sea. The interior is focused around a central communication corridor. The dark phenolic plywood of the exterior provides what the architects call a ''spacesuite'' that protects the home owners from the realities of the outside world. The design spans three levels of living. It's a good example of compact living at its most stylish.

Art Installations at Chateau de Versailles

Claire Sullivan - Friday, September 11, 2009

A year ago artist Jeff Koons upset many a purist art critic with his installation of works at the fantastical Chateau de Versailles. As the famous residence of the ever playful Marie Antionette, it's hard not to love what Koons created for his exhibition. You can be sure that the outrageous Queen would have gotten a great deal of pleasure from his oversized glass balloon dogs.

This year the priviledge has been past onto artist Xavier Veilhan, whose installation (images below) is equally appropriate and fitting with the playful nature of the Chateau's historic resident.

The new Xavier Veilhan installation is on display and open to the public until 13 December 2009.

Kazuki Takamatsu's Paintings

Claire Sullivan - Friday, September 11, 2009

These paintings by artist Kazuki Takamatsu sit between beautiful and alarming. We like them.
