Furniture by Ayala Serfaty

Anna Kidman - Thursday, March 24, 2011

Ayala Serfaty has a fine arts background that she applies to create her own visual language when it comes to furniture.  As one half of Aqua Creations (a position she shared with her photographer business partner) they aim to create pieces that embrace sensuality of materials and form. These pieces, many of which made from velvet and equipped with brass buttons have an exaggerated feel to them, that lend better to furniture-as-art over function.

Anna Kidman - Tuesday, March 22, 2011

Framed is a storage cabinet by Koenraad Ruys for Moca. Comprised of multiple compartments in different colours, it offers a versatile storage solution for those seeking function and form. All the compartments are integrated into a black steel frame. The simplicity of the black frame balanced with the playfulness of the boxes helps ensure this piece's success.

Marie-Sophie Chair by Pierre Brichet

Anna Kidman - Tuesday, March 15, 2011

A steel trellis forms the structure of Marie-Sophie, a chair that embraces a sense of visual geometry with its design. Designed by Pierre Brichet for Coming Soon Galerie, it reminds us of the Butterfly Chair, with its composition of simple raw materials. The base of the structure gives an illusion of volume, whilst the seat made from leather, curves to create the seat and back of the chair. In a limited edition of 8, each chair is numbered and signed by Pierre himself.

Soft Benches by Veronika Tzekova

Anna Kidman - Monday, March 14, 2011

Space Nrgzer #4 soft benches is an installation of strings attached to public benches in Biella, Italy. Artist and designer Veronika Tzekova focuses on shifting the appearance and meaning of standard objects, objects she considered 'ill elements' of cities where she has lived. She conceived the soft bench after observing a series of awkwardly placed benches.

She explains:

The resulting soft benches are like vivacious yellow rays of light and yet are not usable urban furniture. The use of locally produced wool thread memorializes the social aspect of the economic decline of the textile industry in the region as it is no longer something upon which the local population is able to rely or lean on.

We would like to see them in a solid material for a dramatic but usable take on the standard city bench.

Happy Chair by Pini Leibovich

Anna Kidman - Monday, March 14, 2011

Pini Leibovich is an Israeli designer based in Tel Aviv. He teaches at the Shenkar College of Engineering and Design and also makes furniture on the side. The Happy chair featured above, looks like a positive version of Cousin It, and channels a Campana Brothers' aesthetic with its nod to surrealism and furniture-as-art. Made from thousands of balloons, it's a nice teaser to more of his work that will be on display during Milan design week in April.

Thonet Sculptures by Pablo Reinoso

Anna Kidman - Sunday, March 13, 2011

Earlier this year Paris-based designer Pablo Reinoso reinvented the iconic Thonet chair by applying different treatments and manipulating its original form. Physically pushing the boundaries of its usual structure, in some cases he has distorted and stretched the backs of the chairs and others where he has unwound the woven vegetable fibers that are so heavily associated with its original design. The results are sculptural and dramatic.

Spurt Chair by Studio Paulsberg

Anna Kidman - Saturday, March 05, 2011

Made from one piece of carbon-textile reinforced concrete, German design studio Paulsberg drew inspiration from the silhouette of a sprinter just about to start the race for the Spurt chair. The form of the chair is very fluid despite its hard material use, and is surprisingly comfortable do to its ergonomic design.

The Blow Sofa, designed by Malafor is made from 100% recycled paper dunnage bags. Incredibly easy to transport when deflated, you literally just blow them up to inflate. And for added personalisation, you could take to it with a pen, or simply replace it if it gets beyond repair.
